From the New York Times–bestselling author of The Immigrant The conclusion to the Lavette family saga is “addictive as candy” and “genuinely touching” (Publishers Weekly).

In the sixth and final installment of the Immigrants saga, Fast revisits the charismatic Barbara Lavette. In this emotional farewell, Barbara, the rock and matriarch of her family, marries a Unitarian priest, and together they travel the world. Though Fast wrote over eighty books, including Spartacus, April Morning, and Freedom Road, his Immigrants saga remains some of his most personal and moving work.

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Howard Fast including rare photos from the author’s estate.

An Independent Woman A Novel Lavette Family Saga Book 6 edition by Howard Fast Literature Fiction eBooks

All of the Howard Fast's books are superb. However, my favorites are the Immigration six series--the Establishments,The Legacy, The Second Generation, The Immigrants Daughter, and last (after ten years), The Independent Woman. Feminists, particularly those of us past 55, would love the last two that reminds us of how we contributed to the Feminism movement. His writing is superb, carefully researched every war, incident, and political event and wove the characters into the events. I loved them all but you could read any of them individually as he has a way of writing that includes all the events and characters. Although it starts (The Immigrants) with WW I and goes through 1985, are historical and romantic novels that capture your heart and soul. Men and women would both love all the books!

wish the series had never ended.....thoroughly wonderful
The book was in decent condition but I don't really think "very good" would really apply. However it served it's purpose and allowed me to complete the series.
This was a perfect ending to the series. Howard Fast pulled everything together beautifully, and the ending of this book was just as it should be. The writing and story line was improved on "An Independent Woman," as compared to the previous book. It was hard to see a period at the end of the characters, but you saw parts of all of them that you knew where there, but you just hadn't quite seen before. For me, that was the best part.

This version was fairly clean, with only a few punctuation and spelling errors, but nothing distracting.

I recommend this series from beginning to end.
I hate to stop reading a book halfway through, but I am struggling with this final book in the Lavette saga. I have enjoyed the other books, although I have to admit that by the end of The Immigrant's Daughter, I was beginning to tire of "Saint Barbara." She is just so beautiful, so brilliant, so talented, so wise, so tolerant - please give her some HUMAN character. I also agree with the reviewer who said she read the whole series again in anticipation of the release of the final book. The author should have done the same thing. I was very distracted by the details that were forgotten, ignored or changed. I'll keep plugging along until I finish the book because I want to know how the story ends, but this will definitely not be a "re-read" for me.
This is the last book in the six-book series of the Lavette family saga. I have read all six books. While I gave five stars to the first five books, I found this one to be extraordinarily flat. It was almost like someone other than Howard Fast had written it.

The Lavette family saga could easily have been concluded with the fifth book. I recommend skipping this sixth book.
There were too many characters with too much interlocking of their lives. It was difficult to keep track of the age of the people and the relationship between some of them. The main character, Barbara Lavette, fell easily in love with men after knowing them for only a short time and then they either died or in one case divorced the man but later after he married some other woman, became his lover and then he died. In the end, she died. It was just too sad.
I love all of Howard Fast's works. This is one of a series. I read the series long ago and am now listening to them. A very long interesting family saga. His books come from a Jewish perspective which I am very interested in. No, I am not Jewish and no, not all characters are Jewish. His books often make you think and do not come across as dated. If you have not read this series or his work, I suggest that you try it.
