Priscilla Brunell, Marchioness of Rutherford, is in desperate need of a son and heir. Her seventy-year-old husband of ten years has died leaving her a virgin and the protectress of his estates. If she can’t produce a son in the next nine months, the current heir, Damon, will succeed in ruining the family fortunes in a matter of a few years due to his gaming and womanizing. Dare she ignore her morals and pass another man’s child off as her husband’s? Can she do so without losing her heart?
Soon to be the Viscount Brookfield, Brandon Bradley arrives at a house party at the insistence of his dying father. In all rights, he should be home marrying Estella and begetting his heir. Estella is certainly pleasant and attractive, but in all their years of friendship he has never felt anything but a cold distance from her. Then he meets Lady Rutherford. Not only can she help him through his grief, he is immediately attracted to her. Can he let down his father and Estella merely for his own benefit? Can he break the pattern of society and marry for love?

Finally a romance that has what I want: strong characters, an intriguing storyline, intelligent character action, and realistic conflict resolution. It's always satisfying to get the HEA, but it really bugs me when the bad guys are tolerated because they are family, ignored because they are juvenile, or just plain get away with their schemes. I really hate it when the H/h have misunderstandings that they never talk about to each other, or when they think they know what they other is thinking or feeling but never find out for sure before acting in a ridiculous and frustrating manner. Thankfully none of these negatives happen in this book. What a pleasure it was to read a historical romance still full of malice, intrigue, and deception but also with a H/h who spoke to each other, confessed their feelings, and sought to do what was best for each other and their families. There are some truly nasty characters here, from lecherous house party guests to a creepy inheriting nephew. There is also a H who fully admits his dissipated past and feels torn between love and duty. The h is quietly strong with an undercurrent of vulnerability who is also torn between the heritage of her late husband's marquessate and her future happiness. The way the H/h resolve the major impediment to their future happiness is brilliant and so satisfying. They talk it out, examining all the angles and possibilities, without rushing to judgment or acting self-centeredly. How refreshing!I don't think any more plot needs revealing past what the book description tells, other than what I alluded to above. There are a few surprising subplots and one slightly cheesy fairytale twist, but it is a romance, after all. I for one want to feel like I went on a fantastic ride through someone's life after reading a novel. This book is one such ride.
For the purists I will warn that there are several instances of anachronistic speech, but the author works them into the story so they sound like natural statements from the characters rather than language mistakes. A few contemporary phrases are used, but they are couched in terms that suggest the characters thought them up themselves. I don't think these occurrences take away from the storyline nor prevent the reader from being swept away to the 19th century. For the puritans I will warn that this book is steamy and explicit, so cover your eyes when in the bedrooms (and the summer house, and the lake, and the maze...).

If Love Were Enough edition by Suzanne Quill Romance eBooks Reviews
A very intriguing story with a few twists and turns along the way. Will there be a happy ending to this tale? IF LOVE WERE ENOUGH was a wonderful uniquely written romance about a couple that wasn't afraid to take love up to another whole new level. But will it last? This story really moved me. The author weaved together a beautiful story filled with romance from page one all the way through to the last page. And, wonderful characters that weren't afraid to be themselves. I loved the way Cilla's character, so full of ambition, had a strong ability to go after and get what she needed to fulfill her destiny. But will she hit a stumbling block along the way? Is someone out to get what she has? And, will love be enough to get her through the task ahead? And, Lord Brandon Brookfield had so much compassion toward his father and rushing to his side. When he needed his son the most, Lord Brandon was there to help him. Even after Lady Rutherford thought Lord Brandon had abandoned her. Will he come through for her, or leave her in the clutches of an evil lord?
A wonderful title to go along with a great plot. I wasn't expecting such a shock of an ending though. But I guess that would be a difficult and horrifically, final way out, especially if someone is out to hurt you.
When Lady Priscilla Rutherford's husband died and she had failed to give him the one thing he had needed and wanted. An heir in order to keep Northumberland. Lady Rutherford had promised to try and find a way to fight and keep her estate. But someone else wants that estate and will also fight tooth and nail to get it, and will do just about anything to keep it, including murder, if need be.
An evil villain is someone who is power-hungry, greedy, and out to take by force if necessary what that criminal wants. And, in this story, that could very well be the case. While Lady Rutherford had been visiting her brother to try and solve her dilemma, Damon had taken over. Will he take her estate and leave her penniless? Will she be able to stop him, or will she loose her chance at a legal heir? A superb tale and fascinating characters that will stay with you long after the story is finished. I loved it!!
