A widower and his estranged adult daughter stitch their relationship back together on a comedic road trip from Florida to New York. Sybil wants no part of her father, Nestor. He wants no part of her. They relish the thousand miles which keeps them apart. But the death of Sybil’s mother upsets their equilibrium. Nestor reluctantly agrees to move in with his sister in New York. Sybil reluctantly agrees to fetch him. The two bitch at each other from the moment she arrives in Florida, and on this low note, their road trip odyssey begins. Nestor won't fly. Sybil won't take a train. So they take Nestor's broken down car.

They roll through a series of misadventures heading north. Nestor disappears, gets arrested and fakes a heart attack. A car breaks down. A rental is stolen. Money’s missing. The relationship between Dad and daughter strains even more if that is possible. Throw in the increasing likelihood Sybil will miss the promised date to return to work, jeopardizing her job. When Nestor picks up Sybil's prowess for knitting along the way, however, a bond develops that unravels two decades of mutual animosity, paving the way to beat the clock back to New York.

Nestor and Sybil are the most unlikely due for a humorous drive up the coast, but I suppose that is where some of the best stories come from intense clashing of personalities. At first, it was almost uncomfortable to read the interaction between these two, and when an author can actually make me feel the tension (or the resentment), I know that they have a deep understanding of human nature. Capturing the nuances of fathers and daughter, friends, lovers, or anything in between can so often come off as inauthentic, but at no point while reading Sokolic's book did I ever feel like this was "staged" or contrived. The dialogue was terse and believable, the problems and issues were deep-seated and realistic....I haven't ever been estranged from a parent, but the emotional shift of child and parent was fascinating to watch - almost visceral. Peppered in between hilarious incidents, unexpectedly touching moments, and a few times where I thought everything was going to come unraveled (pardon the pun), Sokolic created a beautiful story of forgiveness, compromise, family, and fortitude. Nicely done.

Knit One A Comedic Screenplay edition by William Sokolic Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Though there is no biographical data on William Sokolic, either on his page or in his book, scanning the Internet suggests that her is a reporter at the Courier-Post, covers Camden County, features, too, lives at the Jersey Shore and runs Atlantic City Cinefest. No other publications are listed so this may be his debut work. And then again this may be the wrong William Sokolic!

Reading screenplays in book form takes some adjusting to the eyes - unless of course you are an actor or director and are used to the disambiguation of dialogue and description of locale/place. As an example, the play opens thus `FADE IN EXT. SARASOTA HOSPITAL -- DAY A modern, but sterile building. Ambulances pull up to the entrance. INT. SARASOTA HOSPITAL ROOM -- DAY Lying beneath a pink and white afghan, bedridden and emaciated, HANNIE TOLAND, 64, nods to her husband, NESTOR, 66. He picks up the remote, shuts off the soap opera, "Restless Lives." Still possessing the physique from his days as a New York City cop, Nestor turns back to his dying wife. Hannie points to the door. Nestor nods. He pauses. Heads towards the door. Beyond the door, BOBBY TOLAND, 34 , and SYBIL NICOLELLA, 37, stare through the narrow glass window. The door opens. Nestor walks out. Bobby and Sybil enter. No words or gestures pass between the three. The door closes. Nestor stands outside the room, looking in the window. Stylishly dressed, Sybil walks to one side of the bed. She puts a knitting bag on the chair. Bobby, an even more impeccable dresser, walks to the other side, eyes red from crying. Sybil picks up Hannie's hand. SYBIL Mom. Hannie manages a smile. Using what little strength she can muster, Hannie points to the nightstand. SYBIL What?`

But once adjusted to this writing status, William shows that he has a keen sense of dialogue pacing and a fine sense of humor (at times under a veils of darkness) that makes this screenplay seem ready for the silver screen. William summarizes his plot (to be read before opening the book, for the sake of clarification for novices to screenplays) A widower and his estranged adult daughter stitch their relationship back together on a comedic road trip from Florida to New York. Sybil wants no part of her father, Nestor. He wants no part of her. They relish the thousand miles which keeps them apart. But the death of Sybil's mother upsets their equilibrium. Now read the screenplay and appreciate the finesse William has in developing these fully fleshed out characters and their plights and idiosyncrasies. It works, Seems ready for production to me. Grady Harp May 15
Knit One A Comedic Screenplay by William Sokolic is a 148 page screenplay. This book grabbed me within the first few pages, I read from fade in to fade out without any breaks. Clear your afternoon and make time for this quick, fun read. It is definitely a character driven story. I really enjoyed Nestor and Sybil’s relationship, it felt genuine. They were a very fun and likable pair. I found myself rooting for them and liked their emotional journey. I hope to see more from this author.
Family dynamics can be a difficult thing to capture in literature; some authors excel at it, but many fail, yet all of them seem to try in some way. It is such a powerful and universal force for us as readers; we can understand the emotions, tap into the psyches, and empathize with the struggles of characters in the midst of family crises. In Knit One, we see two unlikely members of a dissolved family, freshly thrown back together to quite literally unravel the past as they go on a journey together.

In the same spirit as Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, On the Road, and Travels with Charley, this story reminds us that traveling is synonymous with life. Difficulties arise, some more impossible than others to overcome, but somehow, we always manage to find our way back to some semblance of a path. Nestor and Sybil make an amazing comedic pair in this piece, and I thoroughly enjoyed the crispness of the exchanges--the realism in the dialogue. Sokolic clearly understands human nature, from its simplest and most banal form to the great questions of life, family, forgiveness, and redemption. Excellent work. A truly enjoyable read.
