The Magic Skin Honore De Balzac 9781357039523 Books

While I am no expert in French literature, I believe The Magic Skin is the first book in Balzac's magnum opus The Human Comedy.

The Human Comedy is supposed to be analogous to the Divine Comedy of Dante, except that instead of describing the supernatural world of hell, purgatory and heaven Balzac surveys all of the different types of life exhibited in the France of his day.

Some of the book's themes, such as materialism, continue to resonate today and I enjoyed Balzac's vivid descriptions of 19th century France but the cultural distance between his time and ours made some parts of the book difficult reading. Because of this, I doubt whether anyone who is reading primarily for pleasure will like this book.

In short, if you like reading about other cultures and eras The Magic Skin is almost a must-read. If you are reading primarily for enjoyment I would recommend another book.
