This book is so timely, with a plot that centers on the abduction of an American serviceman by North Korea and its attempt to use him for their own propaganda purposes. The ripple effects of this act are enormous, and you feel for the many affected characters who don't know what to believe or how to maintain hope in the midst of an upsetting and confusing situation that has turned their lives upside down. The captive Marine has suddenly lost his good reputation, his credibility, and his physical and mental health, while the world of his wife and son has been rocked, not only by his disappearance and apparent collaboration with a political enemy, but from an inability to hang on to any semblance of their pre-incident lives due to the intrusion and targeting by the news media and the U.S. government. The tables turn very quickly in this story! I really enjoyed this book. It took many unexpected turns and twists. During the main characters capture I could feel his pain and agony of the physical and emotional turmoil. I can definitely see this as a movie. Great first novel.
I very much liked the interplay of historical facts with the fictional story. It gave the book realism that kept me very interested and made it hard to put down. I would highly recommend this book regardless of the type of genre you typically read.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book, but it kept pulling me in. I started caring for the characters pretty quickly, and was totally engrossed with what they did, and what was done to them. The tension kept growing to point that I couldn't put it down. It's very clever, and surprising. I also learned a lot about life in North Korea, which is helpful these days. Buy the book, you'll enjoy it.
I was recommended this book by a friend and in a day and age where it's hard to find time to read, this one will have you wanting to keep reading. The characters and their experiences are entirely relatable despite the uniqueness of their circumstances. Looking forward to future reads by this author.
Can't get over how much I liked this book. I literally had a dream that I was involved in the story the night I finished it. I guess that sort of sums up my impressions -- very favorable! The story kept my interest and I wanted to keep reading each night. (It took me about 5 nights and I usually read for an hour or less.) Also, I liked the writing. Very descriptive and I felt like I was there with the characters. I've read lots of Jack Reacher books and this sort of reminds me of that style of book. All in all I loved it. This was recommended by a friend in Boulder and I'm really grateful.
Learned about North Korea, probably more than I wanted to know.
I’d recommend this book to anyone who likes thrillers. Many of my friends.

The book began as a romance novel. However, the romance part was relatively brief and the book went on to be entertaining and interesting. Because history is not a strength of mine, I liked the light historical slant to help me learn about the time and people. Each evening I looked forward to reading the book! It was a great story that I enjoyed.
