The art world welcomed rebellion but by the 1960 s, paintings of soup cans and gumball machines became mainstream. A few artists chose a path led not by the whims of the market, but rather the truth of their own conscience with a deep concern for the human condition. Frank Rampolla (1931-1971) ascended from this select group. Rampolla, schooled in the ways of the old masters, had an extraordinary classical knowledge of the arts and literature. He was a classically trained pianist and composer as well as a painter. Scores of artists followed his lead then, and a generation of artists still see his influence in their work today. Many have experienced and appreciated Rampolla s large oil paintings, but none except a few close to him have seen his personal sketchbooks until now. This book is an intimate collection of personal drawings, studies, and ideas from the mind and heart of one of the foremost artists and thinkers of the 20th century.

As a docent at the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Modern Art on the Tarpon Springs campus of St. Petersburg College, I purchased this book at the museum store because an exhibition of "Remembering Frank Rampolla" is currently on display (October 1 - December 4, 2011).
I wanted to broaden my knowledge of this figurative expressionist painter whose paintings are imbued with the social and political commentary from my era of the 1960's.
This sketchbook includes works that are signed, some studies and other unfinished drawings of Frank Rampolla. Through the 108 pages, his son, Ron, has selected each of the works and interweaves commentary by his father's friends, colleagues, and former students that gives us a clearer sense of the man and his mission.
To give dignity without pomp, to lend significance with anecdote - in short, to become a performance of the visual is the objective.
To give form, Structure, to immobilize the vagaries that are called ideas and intuitions, are for me the reason for picture making.
